Wnek spent more than a month designing and building the eight-foot-high spacecraft from PVC piping, Styrofoam and colored lights. The inspiration came from the theme of the annual Halloween party planned by his wife, Corinne: “Aliens Among Us.”
The saucer features an entrance underneath, with enough room for an adult to stand inside. Its interior includes lights, bats, giant space spiders and a steering wheel with a skeletal pilot and co-pilot. Outside, two five-foot-tall animated aliens move, flash bright green eyes and speak their own “galactic language.”
The creation proved sturdy enough to withstand a recent nor’easter, according to the family.
Beyond their own decorations, the Wneks see Halloween as an opportunity to bring neighbors together. Corinne hopes more residents and businesses will create seasonal displays and has considered turning a future party into a small fundraiser for a family in need.
“Sometimes simple really is better and what a fun way to build community!” she said.
